Implementation:

Throughout the course of the year, we will discuss cultures from all over the globe, from many different points in human history. One such culture is that of the ancient Romans. The roman empire is widely considered to be the most advanced and influential civilization of all time. As we, as a class, discuss ancient Rome, we will embark on a different kind of learning technique. One that will not require a textbook or a blackboard, but a computer and an open mind. Students of today must have an understanding of how to utilize the Internet for research and academics, as well as for music and games.
students will be asked to complete one of six tasks, using their knowledge of ancient Rome. Because we are a 6th grade class, links will be provided to various websites, in order to help students in their research. Once the students access these sites, however, they are responsible for researching and locating the proper information. Students are not limited to the sites that are provided by the links and are free to access and information they wish in order to complete their task.
Students will be shown in class, via a projection screen, how to use the curriculum web and what is expected of them. Each link will be demonstrated and each subject covered, prior to the students being given access to the site.
Students will be given two weeks to completer the task. Students will be given at least 3 days, over the course of two weeks, in the computer lab in order to work on their project. Students are expected to work on their task and only their task while they are in the computer lab. Any student who is caught working on anything other than their task while in the computer lab, will lose computer privileges for that day. students will also be allowed time in the media center, during the final week of the assignment, in order to complete the assignment. Students who do not have access to the Internet outside of school will be given first priority.
If students have any questions, while working on their task outside of class, my email will be posted on the curriculum web and a blog site will be made available so that students may help each other.
I fully understand that the availabilty of computers at school is limited, and that not every student has access to a computer outside of school. I will make every effort to accomodate students who can not work on their task at home, and make sure that they recieve extra time on a school computer. Students will know in advance when we are scheduled to use the computer lab, so please make an extra effort to be in class and on time that day, so that you may have the same time in the lab as every other student. We will have three days and three days only, in the computer lab, so please utilize that time.
